Neck
and back strains and sprains
Your
back or neck may be strained or sprained when a sudden movement
or force tears or overstretches the muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Strains can also result from overuse.
Sprains
and strains cause pain that gets worse with movement.
At
first, treatment for these injuries includes rest and pain relievers.
But physical therapy should be started soon to loosen and strengthen
the injured tissues.
Therapy
for neck and back strains and sprains may include:
-
Applying ice or heat.
- Ultrasound,
which helps warm and stretch tissues under the surface.
- Exercises
to gently stretch the muscles.
-
Exercises to stabilize the muscles.
- Exercises
to strengthen the muscles.
-
Low-level electrical stimulation.
- Manual
therapy techniques to help soft-tissue restrictions.
