Ankle
sprains
Ankle
sprains are one of the most common sports injuries. Though they
often seem minor, ankle sprains can cause long-term problems if
they're not treated properly.
Sprains
happen when ankle ligaments are stretched or torn. The ligaments
are strong bands of tissue that help stabilize and support the ankle
joint. The ligaments on the outside of the ankle are most prone
to injury.
An
ankle sprain may happen when someone jumps and comes down on the
side of the foot or overworks the ligaments with too much running
or exercise. A sprain can also result from direct trauma, such as
a tackle or blow.
To
heal, a sprained ankle needs time to rest, followed by a gradual
program of stretching, strengthening and conditioning.
Physical
therapy for a sprained ankle may include:
- Icing.
- Exercises
to slowly strengthen the muscles and ligaments.
- Exercises
to increase flexibility, balance and coordination.
- Drills
that focus on the skills and demands of a specific sport.
